Building Trust in Carbon Markets: Why Nordic Cooperation Matters
As the global race to net zero accelerates, carbon markets are moving from the sidelines of climate policy to the center of corporate and government climate strategies. Yet one question continues to dominate the discussion: how can carbon markets deliver real climate impact with integrity, transparency and trust?
This was the focus of Nefco’s Nordic Roundtable on High-Integrity Carbon Markets, held in Helsinki. Bringing together policymakers, business leaders and carbon market experts from across the Nordic region, the event explored how cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement can create new opportunities for climate action while maintaining the highest environmental standards. Discussions highlighted both the growing interest in international carbon markets and the challenges that remain—from regulatory uncertainty and host-country readiness to ensuring the credibility and quality of carbon credits.
A clear message emerged from the roundtable: Nordic countries are uniquely positioned to help shape the future of high-integrity carbon markets. By combining strong climate ambitions, trusted institutions and practical business expertise, the region can play a leading role in developing carbon market solutions that support both global emissions reductions and long-term sustainable growth.
